By this time everyone has at least read one review of The Detective by Roderick Thorpe. Generally the best advice concerning the book is: Don’t believe the reviewers. As far as the subject of homosexuality is concerned it isn’t a major treatment except in a very dishonest sense, and it is seamy, exaggerated and unbelievable.
It has been suggested that Random House (who published Mr. Thorpe’s first novel some years back) regrets having turned the book down; they shouldn’t. It would do their list no credit. The book is already a best-seller; I wish I knew why.
